Frequently asked questions

Is the OpenVIN VIN decoder free?

Yes. OpenVIN is free and needs no account. The decoder sends your VIN from your browser directly to NHTSA's public vPIC service, and OpenVIN does not store it.

How do I know if my car has an open recall?

Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Our model-year pages list every recall NHTSA has for that make, model and year, but a recall often covers only some vehicles, so the VIN lookup is the way to confirm your car.

Do I have to pay for recall repairs?

No. For vehicles first sold within the past 15 years, federal law requires the manufacturer to remedy a safety recall defect free of charge, usually through its dealers. Contact a dealer for that brand to schedule the repair.

Where do the fuel economy numbers come from?

From FuelEconomy.gov, run by the U.S. Department of Energy with EPA data. We show EPA city, highway and combined estimates for 15,990 versions of 2015–2027 cars, SUVs and pickups; the file we use is dated Sep 29, 2026.

What are NHTSA owner complaints?

Reports drivers file with NHTSA about possible safety problems. They are not verified, but NHTSA uses them to spot defects. We show counts and the components mentioned most, not the complaint text.

How often is OpenVIN updated?

Recall, complaint and fuel economy files are refreshed once a day; crash-test ratings are rechecked weekly for recent model years. Model-year pages also check NHTSA for newer recalls in your browser. This snapshot was updated Oct 27, 2026, 7:34 AM EDT.

About the data

Everything here comes from public U.S. government data. Recall descriptions are NHTSA's; fuel economy figures are EPA's. We match the two by make, model and year name, which works for most vehicles — when a match is uncertain we say so instead of showing a zero.
